Direct answer

What OTIA does on custom uniforms

On The Island Apparel runs a real apparel shop in Huntington, NY that builds custom uniform programs for Long Island businesses, restaurants, trades crews, healthcare offices, schools, and service teams. Embroidery, DTF print, and laser are all in-house. Pricing is flat per piece at any quantity — a single uniform shirt costs the same per piece as a hundred — and reorders against an already-set logo ship the same week so your uniform program still matches a year in.

Why Long Island employers run their uniform program through OTIA

A custom uniform program lives or dies on its second year, not its first. Almost every Long Island employer who calls us has already tried a national print-on-demand or screen-printing vendor for the initial order. The initial order arrives, looks acceptable, and the team wears the gear for a season. Then the new-hire reorder comes up — and the original blank is discontinued, or the embroidery file is gone, or the color shifted by half a shade, or the lead time is six weeks. The uniform stops matching. Leadership eats the cost and either restarts the program from scratch or quietly lets it die.

OTIA is built for the second year. The embroidery machines, the DTF press, the laser, the digitizing workstation, the blank inventory, and the people running all of it are in the same building in Huntington, NY. When you order forty uniform polos for your sales team or twenty hi-vis tees for a contractor crew, we pull blanks from inventory, digitize the logo once, run the production, and keep both the digitized file and the SKU history on file. Three months later, when a new hire starts or you swap a torn shirt, we run a single piece against the exact same setup — same blank, same color, same stitch path. Reorders ship within the same 72-hour window as the original.

Pricing is a flat per-piece promise. There are no quantity-break tiers, no setup fees, no minimum order, and no rush surcharge for standard production. A single uniform shirt costs the same per piece as a hundred. We chose flat pricing because it is the only way to tell a buyer what their second-year reorder will cost without scheduling a sales call. The math we use to quote you in the inbox is the same math the storefront uses to price the cart, so the number you saw is the number you pay.

Use cases

Six common uniform programs we run

Most Long Island uniform programs fall into one of six categories. Each one has a different right answer for the blank, the decoration method, and the trade-offs the buyer should know about.

Restaurant uniforms

Front-of-house polos, back-of-house tees, chef coats, and aprons. Survival-grade fabric and decoration. Easy weekly reorder.

Restaurant uniform programs are the highest-failure use case we see, because the gear takes the worst beating. Front-of-house polos see food contact, sweat, wine spills, and a hot commercial wash cycle at the end of every night. Back-of-house tees see grease, prep work, and a wash cycle hot enough to denature most printed transfers. Chef coats need to look guest-facing from across a dining room and survive a brunch service. Aprons are abused on day one. A restaurant uniform program that uses thin garments or the wrong decoration method visibly fails by month three, and the owner notices when the staff starts looking shabby.

We default to the Port Authority K500 Silk Touch for FOH polos in darker colors that hide spills, embroidered with polyester thread at the left chest because polyester thread holds through commercial wash cycles that crack DTF transfers. For BOH tees we recommend the Jerzees 29M Dri-Power or the Gildan 5000 in heavier-weight cotton, decorated with DTF on the chest because BOH tees are more forgiving than polos for printed art and the full-color flexibility matters. Chef coats come from the Chef Designs 0413-line and the 0421-line — both are real chef-coat blanks built for service, not generic white button-downs. Aprons come from the Port Authority A800-equivalent CornerStone line and embroider cleanly with a left-chest restaurant mark.

Reorders are the win. Every restaurant we work with eventually loses a polo to a wine spill, a tee to a grease fire, or a chef coat to a new line cook. We hold the digitized embroidery file and the SKU history on file, so a single replacement piece runs against the exact same setup as the original program — no re-digitization fee, no setup charge, no minimum. The replacement matches.

Recommended decoration · EMBROIDERY+DTF

Embroidery on FOH polos and chef coats (polyester thread for commercial wash). DTF on BOH tees where full-color flexibility matters more than wash-cycle longevity.

Restaurant & hospitality uniform programs

Corporate uniforms

Sales-team polos, office-staff button-downs, customer-facing executive tiers, and welcome-kit packages for new hires.

Corporate uniform programs at a Long Island company usually start with a sales team or a customer-facing operations team — somewhere between a dozen and forty people who need to be in matching, on-brand apparel for client visits, trade shows, conferences, and year-round identification. The buyer is usually an office manager, an HR lead, a marketing director, or a fast-growth founder who has finally accepted that the team showing up in mismatched company-branded shirts from three vintages of giveaway swag is no longer acceptable. The brief is always the same: it has to look professional, it has to age well, and the new hire who starts in March has to be able to get the exact same thing as the team that got fitted in January.

We default to the Port Authority K500 Silk Touch polo for the staff tier and the Port Authority W100 Carefree Poplin or Sport-Tek button-down for office-staff who need a slightly more structured layer. Customer-facing executive tiers move up to the Mercer+Mettle MM1014 stretch pique for a visible step-up that does not feel awkwardly hierarchical. The most common bulk-reorder cycle is quarterly: a base order at quarter-start to absorb new hires and replacements, with single-piece replacement orders running between cycles against the same digitized file.

Welcome-kit packages are where corporate uniform programs scale cleanly. We pack a new-hire kit — typically two polos, one button-down, one cap, one branded tote — fulfilled directly to the employee's home address. The HR team specifies the SKU list and the budget per kit; we draw against the kit list as new hires onboard. This collapses the painful coordination problem of getting new employees in uniform on day one. Cross-link reference: dedicated corporate uniform store programs live at /stores for any program above 30 employees.

Construction & trades uniforms

Hi-vis tees, durable workwear hoodies, crew jackets, and field shirts. Built for 3-location decoration: chest, back, sleeve.

Construction and trades uniform programs solve a different problem than office-staff programs. The crew lead needs hi-vis tees that meet site visibility requirements, work shirts and hoodies durable enough to survive a real workday, and decoration laid out so the brand reads from the field as well as from a parking lot. Most trades programs end up with three decoration locations on every piece: a chest logo (~3 inches wide), a large back imprint with the company name (10-12 inches wide for site visibility), and a sleeve hit identifying the crew lead, the trade, or the location. The job is not aesthetic; the job is that the company is identifiable from a hundred feet away on a site.

We default to the CornerStone CSV-series hi-vis tees for any crew working roadside, in active site traffic, or anywhere ANSI visibility requirements apply. For non-hi-vis daily-wear we recommend the CornerStone SP-series long-sleeve work shirts, the Sport-Tek ST350 performance tee for warm-weather field crews, and the CornerStone CS620 hoodie for cold-weather field work. Carhartt long-sleeve tees and hoodies (CTK87, CT104293) are the premium-tier ask we hear most often from established trades brands; while not currently in the OTIA standard catalog we can source them on request for any program that specifies them.

DTF print is the right call for trades workwear in most cases. The high-visibility chest plus back logo combination prints cleanly in full color, the durability is acceptable on home-laundered workwear, and the per-piece cost stays reasonable across the three decoration locations. For crews wanting a more permanent finish we run embroidery on the chest and DTF on the back — embroidery survives the longest on field-abused garments, but a large back print embroidered would push the piece price beyond what most trades programs accept.

Recommended decoration · DTF

DTF default — full-color chest + large back + sleeve. For premium finishes, embroidery on the chest plus DTF on the back keeps cost reasonable while extending the chest-logo service life.

Trades & construction uniform programs

Healthcare & wellness uniforms

Scrubs-alternative polos, fitness-coach branded apparel, dental and veterinary office uniforms, and front-desk staff polos.

Healthcare uniform programs at the small-to-mid-size office level — dental, veterinary, chiropractic, dermatology, urgent care, physical therapy, fitness studios — typically do not need true medical scrubs. What they need is a uniform program that reads professional in a healthcare setting, identifies staff by role, and survives the wash protocols that healthcare-adjacent businesses run. Dental offices want the front-desk team in a branded polo, the hygienists in a more clinical layer, and the doctor in something visibly senior. Veterinary clinics need the kennel team in something durable, the techs in something easy to clean, and the front-desk team in something guest-facing. Fitness studios need the coaching staff in performance apparel that does not look like medical wear.

We default to the Port Authority K500 Silk Touch for front-desk healthcare polos because it embroiders cleanly with the office logo and the office name, runs in stock colors that read clinical (navy, royal, hunter green, charcoal), and survives the home-laundering wash cycles most small healthcare offices use. For hygienist and tech tiers we recommend the Port Authority K420 Pique Knit or the K500 in a darker color with a clinical-adjacent embroidered identifier. For fitness coaching staff the Sport-Tek ST350 performance tee or the ST650 micropique polo gives a true performance-apparel look that signals coaching rather than office staff.

Embroidery is the dominant decoration on healthcare uniforms — the stitched office mark reads as deliberate, professional, and clean, and embroidered thread survives the wash protocols better than printed transfers. We embroider the office logo at the left chest and frequently add a small employee-name tag (also embroidered, with the staff member's first name) on the right chest for offices that want named identification. The name-tag embroidery uses the same digitized template, so adding a new staff name to the program costs the same as the original — flat per-piece, no setup fee.

Recommended decoration · EMBROIDERY

Embroidered office logo at left chest; optional embroidered employee-name tag at right chest. Same flat per-piece price for personalized name-tag embroidery as for plain logo runs.

School uniforms

Polos and button-downs for dress-code schools, plus hoodies and spirit-wear for faculty, athletic staff, and PTO programs.

School uniform programs are a different problem from corporate uniform programs. The buyer is usually a school administrator, a uniform coordinator, a PTO lead, or an athletic department director. The wear is by students (in dress-code schools), faculty, coaching staff, or volunteer parents. The polos and button-downs need to be cost-appropriate enough that nobody minds when a student outgrows one in a semester, low-care enough that home laundering does not destroy them, and available in the exact school colors year-after-year so the program does not collapse when an apparel supplier discontinues a blank.

For student dress-code polos we default to the Port Authority K420 Pique Knit — it is the cost-appropriate student polo, runs in the school-color basics (navy, royal, hunter, red, black, white), and the pique cotton holds up to a full school year of home laundering. For faculty polos we recommend the K500 Silk Touch (or the ladies' L500), which embroiders a more polished school crest than the K420. For dress-code button-downs the Port Authority W100 Carefree Poplin is the standard — no-iron, runs in white, light blue, and pink, and matches the dress-code requirements of most uniform-mandated Long Island private and parochial schools. For PTO and athletic department spirit-wear we run the Port Authority K500 in school colors with DTF spirit-day art or the CornerStone CS620 hoodie for cold-weather faculty and coaching staff.

Embroidery dominates the dress-code side of school uniform programs — the school crest goes left chest in stock school colors and lives on file for the annual back-to-school reorder cycle. PTO spirit-wear and athletic department programs lean on DTF for full-color spirit-day art (the back imprint of a spirit-wear hoodie is the best DTF use case in a school program). For batch reorders before the August / September school start we keep the digitized crest and the SKU history on file, so the annual reorder runs against the same setup as the prior year.

Recommended decoration · EMBROIDERY

Embroidered school crest at left chest in school colors. DTF for PTO spirit-day art, athletic department back imprints, and coaching staff hoodies.

School apparel & dress-code programs

Service-industry uniforms

Landscaping crews, cleaning teams, delivery drivers, mobile-service technicians, and route-based field staff.

Service-industry uniforms — landscaping, cleaning, delivery, mobile-service techs, route-based field staff — are the workwear equivalent of restaurant FOH. The gear lives in a hot vehicle, sees outdoor exposure, gets washed at the end of every workday, and has to read professionally enough that the customer at the front door recognizes the brand and trusts the person standing on their doorstep. The same uniform program also has to scale to multi-route operations where a single business might have a dozen field staff across three vehicles, and where the customer-facing impression matters more than the office-staff impression.

For landscaping crews we default to the CornerStone CSV-series hi-vis tee in safety yellow or safety green for any crew working roadside or near active equipment, paired with a CornerStone SP-series long-sleeve work shirt for the cool-weather seasons. Cleaning crews want the Port Authority K500 in a uniform color (navy or charcoal hides cleaning-chemical contact better than lighter colors) with the cleaning company logo embroidered at the chest. Delivery drivers and mobile-service techs run the Sport-Tek ST350 performance tee for warmer routes and the Port Authority K500 polo for customer-facing handoff routes; both decorate cleanly with a chest logo plus an optional back logo for vehicle-route visibility.

Multi-route operations benefit from running a dedicated company store at /stores. Field staff order their assigned uniform pieces directly against an HR-approved SKU list and budget, replacement orders go straight to the field address, and the central office no longer eats the coordination cost of distributing uniforms across multiple vehicles and route territories. The same flat per-piece pricing applies to a single-piece replacement order as to the initial program order — the field tech who tears a shirt on a job site gets a single replacement at the same per-piece price.

Recommended decoration · EMBROIDERY+DTF

Embroidered company logo at left chest (durable through end-of-day wash cycles). Optional DTF back imprint for vehicle-route visibility identifying the service brand from a distance.

Decoration guidance

Decoration recommendations by uniform type

Every uniform program needs a deliberate decoration choice — the wrong method on the wrong garment is the most common reason uniform programs fail by month six. Here is what we recommend, by category, and the reason behind each call. Per-piece pricing is a flat-rate promise across all decoration methods; we choose the method that holds up longest on the garment in question, not the cheapest one.

FOH polos, healthcare polos, corporate polos

Embroidery (polyester thread)

Embroidered thread holds through hundreds of commercial and home-laundering cycles. Printed transfers crack on the structured chest panel of a polo. Embroidery reads as deliberate and brand-investment-grade from across a room.

Embroidery method details

BOH tees, kitchen tees, employee event tees

DTF print

Cotton and cotton-blend tees take DTF cleanly with full-color art and gradient logos. Embroidery on a soft tee can pucker; DTF lays flat. Service life on a home-laundered tee is fully acceptable for the use case.

DTF printing method details

Trades workwear tees, hi-vis tees, service-industry tees

DTF print (chest + back + sleeve)

Three-location decoration is standard on trades workwear and DTF prints all three locations cleanly in one pass. Hi-vis safety colors require print rather than embroidery for the large back-imprint scale (10-12 inches) that gives field visibility.

DTF printing method details

Cold-weather hoodies, athletic hoodies, faculty / coaching hoodies

DTF (large back imprint) + embroidery (chest)

Embroidered chest holds up over years of wear and signals brand investment. DTF on the back enables the large-scale art that hoodie back panels invite — sports mascots, full-color spirit-day designs, multi-line service-brand identifiers.

Office button-downs, dress-code school button-downs

Embroidery (left chest, optional name tag)

Button-downs read professional with embroidered chest decoration and look wrong with printed transfers. Optional embroidered name tag on the right chest personalizes for healthcare front-desk and hospitality staff at the same flat per-piece pricing.

Embroidery method details

Aprons, chef coats, culinary uniforms

Embroidery

Chef coats and aprons see direct heat exposure during service and a high-temperature commercial wash cycle afterward. Embroidery is the only decoration method that reliably survives both. Restaurant-brand mark goes left chest at a tasteful 3-inch width.

When does screen-print make sense on uniforms?

DTF instead, in almost every case

Traditional screen-print only beats DTF on extremely large quantities of identical art (500+ pieces, 1-3 spot colors, no personalization). For typical Long Island uniform programs — 12 to 200 pieces with variable personalization — DTF gives better per-piece economics, faster turnaround, and easier reorder against the same art file.

Reorder & uniform programs

Reorder programs that still match a year in

Almost every Long Island uniform program we run was rescued from a previous vendor that could not handle the reorder cycle. The initial order is the easy part — most apparel decorators can pull twenty polos, slap on a logo, and ship. The reorder six months later is where vendors fail. The blank gets discontinued, the digitized logo file is lost, the new color is half a shade off, the lead time stretches to six weeks, the per-piece price has crept up, and the program either restarts from scratch or quietly stops mattering.

OTIA is built so the reorder runs against the same setup as the original. The digitized logo lives on file. The blank SKU and color stay locked to the program. The exact stitch path (for embroidery) or the exact art file (for DTF) reruns without re-setup. The per-piece price stays flat. A single-piece replacement runs at the same per-piece price as the original program order, with no re-setup fee, no minimum, and no rush surcharge for standard production timelines. New hires onboarding three months after the initial program order get the exact same uniform pieces the rest of the team got fitted in.

For programs above 30 employees or multi-location operations, we run dedicated company uniform stores. Each authorized employee logs in, sees the SKU list HR has approved, sees the budget HR has set, and orders directly. Replacement uniforms ship to the employee's home or work address; the central office stops eating the coordination cost of distributing uniforms across multiple locations or routes. The store runs against the same flat per-piece pricing as the original program order — no platform fee, no markup, no minimum.

Single point-of-contact matters more than most buyers realize until they need to escalate. Every OTIA uniform program has a named production contact who answers the phone, knows the program history, and can pull up the digitized logo and the SKU list inside two minutes. When a new contractor crew lead calls at 4pm needing twenty hi-vis shirts by Friday, the production contact knows whether the calendar can absorb it and what the lead time is for a true rush — without scheduling a sales call and without three layers of customer-service handoff.

Long Island production

Long Island production: same-week reorders, 72-hour standard turnaround

OTIA runs a real apparel shop in Huntington, NY. The embroidery machines, the DTF press, the laser engraver, the digitizing workstation, the blank inventory, and the people who operate all of it are in the same building. Standard production turnaround on a uniform order is 72 hours from artwork approval. Same-week reorders against an already-digitized logo and an in-stock blank are routine — the production work happens down the hall, not on the other side of a supply chain.

Local matters in ways the order page does not capture. We can drive samples to your office for a fit check before you commit to the program order, meet with a Long Island business to walk through a uniform program in person, take a Friday call from a contractor crew that needs twenty hi-vis tees by Monday, and run a true rush when the calendar can absorb it. National print-on-demand optimizes for unit cost; OTIA optimizes for whether the uniform program still works a year from now.

FAQ

Uniform program questions we get most often

What is the minimum order on a custom uniform program?

There is no minimum order. OTIA runs a digital decoration workflow (DTF, embroidery, laser), so a single replacement uniform shirt for one new hire runs at the same flat per-piece price as a 200-piece program order. Most uniform programs start with an initial batch order to fit the team, then run single-piece replacement orders against the same setup as new hires come on or pieces need replacing.

How does pricing work on uniforms — do I get a discount for ordering more?

No quantity-break discounts. Our pricing is a flat per-piece promise: a uniform shirt costs the same per piece whether you order one or two hundred. The reason is that uniform programs need to support both the initial program order and the ongoing single-piece replacement orders — and tier pricing would punish you on every replacement reorder. The flat per-piece price you saw in your quote is the price you pay on every order against the program, indefinitely. For the full pricing breakdown see /pricing.

What's included when you quote a uniform program?

The quote includes the blank garment cost, the decoration cost (embroidery, DTF, or both), and the per-piece total. There are no separate setup fees on a first order and no separate art fees if your logo is supplied as vector art (SVG, AI, or EPS). If we need to digitize a logo from a raster source (PNG, JPG) the digitization runs as a one-time setup that lives on file forever — every reorder after that runs against the same digitized file with no re-setup. Shipping is billed at cost; in-person Long Island pickup at our Huntington shop is free.

How do I care for the uniforms — what wash protocols do they survive?

Cotton and cotton-blend pieces (Port Authority K500 polos, K420 polos, W100 button-downs, CornerStone CS620 hoodies) survive home laundering in cold to warm water with tumble dry on low or medium. Restaurant FOH polos in the K500 survive commercial wash cycles when embroidered with polyester thread — we use polyester thread by default on any program that mentions commercial laundering. Performance polyester (Sport-Tek ST350 tees, ST650 polos) survives both home and commercial wash and air-dries quickly. Hi-vis tees and chef coats survive a hot commercial wash cycle by design.

Do you stock youth sizing and extended sizes (XS–4XL or larger)?

Yes. The Port Authority K500 / K420 / W100 polos and button-downs run from XS through 6XL on the men's cut and XS through 4XL on the ladies' cut (L500). Sport-Tek ST350 and ST650 run from XS through 4XL men's, XS through 4XL ladies' (LST650). Youth sizing is available on the Port Authority K420 and the Sport-Tek YST350 for school programs that need consistent SKUs across faculty, staff, and student dress-code wear. Hi-vis tees and chef coats run from S through 4XL or 5XL depending on style. Tall sizing (TLK500, TST650) covers the roughly 15% of male program participants who need it.

How does the reorder process work after the initial program order?

Reorders run against the same setup as the original. The digitized logo lives on file, the blank SKU and color stay locked to the program, and the per-piece price stays flat. To reorder, you can email your production contact, place the order through your company uniform store (if you have one set up), or place the order directly through the catalog page for the blank you originally ordered. Standard reorder production runs in the same 72-hour window as new orders. There is no re-setup fee, no minimum on a reorder, and no surcharge for single-piece orders.

Can OTIA hold uniform inventory for our company?

Yes, for established programs. We can hold a buffer of decorated uniforms in popular sizes against your program — usually a few weeks of expected replacement volume — at no inventory holding fee. The buffer means a single-piece replacement order can ship same-day instead of running through the 72-hour production cycle. For company uniform store programs with sustained reorder volume the buffer is part of the standard setup; for smaller programs we run the buffer on request.

Can you embroider name tags and employee numbers on uniforms?

Yes — and the same flat per-piece pricing applies whether the embroidery is a plain company logo or a personalized name tag. Name-tag embroidery on the right chest is standard for healthcare front-desk staff, restaurant FOH at higher-end concepts, hotel and hospitality staff, and any program where customer-facing identification matters. Employee numbers (typically embroidered on the sleeve or back) are common for delivery, mobile-service, and field-tech programs that need route identification. We keep each personalized name and number on file against the program SKU, so reorders for the same employee match exactly.

Do you produce team rosters with player names and numbers?

Yes. For school athletic teams, recreation leagues, and corporate sports programs we run rosters with player names and numbers on the back of jerseys (DTF in most cases for full-color flexibility) or embroidered for higher-end teams. We need a roster spreadsheet with name, number, and size for each player, and we produce against the roster as a single program order. Replacement jerseys for mid-season roster additions run against the same roster setup at the same flat per-piece price.

How do school dress-code uniform programs work?

We run school dress-code programs against a catalog of approved SKUs and colors that the school administration specifies (typically navy / royal / hunter / black polos in K500 or K420, white / light-blue button-downs in W100, and an approved hoodie or fleece for cold weather). The school-approved logo or crest is digitized once and lives on file. Parents order directly through a school uniform store, or order through the catalog page during the back-to-school window with the school's specified SKU and color. Faculty and athletic department staff order through the same store at the same flat per-piece price.

Can I add new employees to an existing uniform program?

Yes. The existing program setup — the digitized logo, the SKU list, the approved colors, the per-piece pricing — supports any number of additional pieces ordered against it indefinitely. A new hire onboarding three months after the initial program order gets the exact same uniform pieces at the same flat per-piece price. The order can come through the company uniform store if you have one set up, or directly through your production contact at OTIA. There is no re-onboarding cost when adding employees to an existing program.

Do you set up dedicated uniform stores for ongoing employee orders?

Yes — and this is the right structure for any program above 30 employees or any multi-location operation. A dedicated company uniform store lives at /stores under your company's own subdomain or path. Each authorized employee logs in, sees the SKU list and color options HR has approved, sees the budget HR has set per employee, and orders directly. Replacement orders ship straight to the employee's home or work address; the central HR or office team stops eating the coordination cost. The store runs against the same flat per-piece pricing as the original program order — no platform fee, no markup. For more detail on company stores see /stores.

Do you offer made-to-measure uniforms or custom-cut tailoring?

No. OTIA decorates blank uniforms from the major apparel suppliers (Port Authority, Sport-Tek, CornerStone, Mercer+Mettle, Chef Designs, Red Kap, and others). We do not cut-and-sew custom patterns. If your program requires a custom silhouette, a fully bespoke uniform design, or contract-manufacturing volumes, you are looking for a different type of shop — happy to refer you to one if you reach out. Our brief is to take excellent off-the-shelf uniform blanks and turn them into a coherent, long-lived uniform program through decoration, fit consultation, and reorder support.

How fast can you turn around a uniform reorder?

Reorders against an already-digitized logo and an in-stock blank run inside our standard 72-hour production window. New-color reorders on the same blank typically run in the same window. Same-week turnaround on a fresh 20-50 piece reorder is routine. True rush orders (24-48 hour) are possible when the production calendar can absorb them — we will tell you yes or no on the rush at the time you call, not after the order is placed. For programs running with an OTIA inventory buffer, single-piece replacements can ship same-day.
